Byrd hoping for the same, but different

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La - As high school start gearing up for another season, Byrd would love nothing more than to duplicate last year, with one exception, get to the Dome and win.  But to do it, will take a different path than last year. But they don't care.

A season after coming just inches away from grabbing a state title, a return trip to New Orleans seems like a realistic goal to the Byrd Yellow Jackets.  But as you would expect from this team, they're not getting ahead of themselves

Head coach Mike Suggs says, "It was on their mind all through the offseason and you hope that they use last season to build on and have some momentum coming into this season.  But, on the flip side, it's another season. They've got a goal set and they know that if they do things right and play well enough, then it's possible for you.  But, you've got to line up and play."

Defensive back Jawun Jiles says, "We want to get back there, but we can't just weigh on that and be like we're going back just because we went last year.  You still got to put in the equal work that you did last year.  Nothing's ever promised.  Basically, we've got to keep on doing that work.  Winning the state championship isn't our goal right now, it's the district.  And then you just got to keep going up level by level."

Byrd made it through the playoffs last year on the select side of the bracket, this year they head back to non-select.  When I asked head coach Mike Suggs about how that changes things this year, he said not much, and as usual, they'll just line up and play whoever they are told to play.
