Charter schools in Northwest Louisiana

CADDO PARISH, La. (KTBS) -

Charter schools have long been an issue of debate.

There are those who want more support for public schools and those who support having other educational options for kids.

While there are arguments for each side, they both have a common goal of educating our students.

The future is bright for the charter school market in Northwest Louisiana.

"The idea behind a charter school is that parents should have the opportunity to make decisions for their children on their education and as the current system is set up as it relates to traditional public school, your zip code determines your destiny,"said Caroline Roemer Shirley, Director of Louisiana Public Charter Schools.

Pathways in Education Charter school opened it's doors to students on August 11, 2014 and the response was overwhelming.

"We really had a fantastic turnout for applicants so we where able to choose some fantastic people," said Jonathan Keith, principal.

The school offers a different educational option for parents but caters to a specific type of student.

"We do cater to overage students such as 17-year-old freshmen or 20-year-old freshman. We also service a lot of students that were home schooled," said Keith.

"Charter schools are public schools. They are overseen by a nonprofit board but they fall under the same accountability standards that your rational public schools are required to follow," said Shirley.

In Louisiana 120 charter schools serve on average of 60,000 students.
