Salvation Army offers Little Rock cooling center

Posted: Updated:
Little Rock's Salvation Army opened its cooling center for the first time this summer to provide the city's homeless population with an outlet to escape extreme heat.

The Arkansas Democrat Gazette reports the center opened Monday following a weekend heat advisory by the National Weather Service. The service recorded temperatures of up to 97 degrees on Monday.

A federal 2013 assessment report found that 63 percent of Arkansas' homeless do not live in shelters or have access to air conditioning.

A Salvation Army spokeswoman says the center will open its doors on days when temperatures could reach triple digits.
