Election 2014: Local political dynasties, Bowman bros. follow mother

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

The Kennedy family, the Bushes, the Clintons and now the Hamiters. Political dynasties are an American tradition that isn't just for the national stage. Several local families have felt the urge to pursue political office. In this November's election, local voters will decide if they approve.

You have Erin Leigh Waddell Garrett trying to follow in her father's footsteps for a district judge seat. In Plain Dealing, you have the Hamiters. A divorced couple running in the same district for the board of aldermen. Candidate Robert Hamiter's current wife is also campaigning for justice of the peace. In Caddo Parish, you have the Bowman family.

"I think ever since Jerald was six, Jerald had it in his mind to run for president," Jerry Bowman said. He's running for the District G city council seat.

His brother Caddo Commissioner Jerald Bowman, of District 5, took his late mother Joyce Bowman's place in the district seat last year. The District G seat was also held by his mother for several years. Jerry acceptance by voters for the seat would clearly create a dynasty in an area that includes Queensborough. Of course, there are hurdles he must jump. Bowman faces three opponents on November 4th.

"For us, the Bowman family, we separate the politician from the individual," Jerry Bowman said. "As far as helping people or doing what we can to help the next man, someone we don't know, that's just been reared and instilled in us for a long, long time"

Both Jerald and Jerry say their mother, a very passionate politician, and their community activist father have influenced their paths. The Bowman's aren't the first to follow in a parent's footsteps. The Darby brothers in Bossier Parish at one time simultaneously served on the Bossier City Council, the police jury and the school board.

Jerald Bowman doesn't have to worry about protecting his seat on the Caddo Commission until 2016. Jerry Bowman, again, faces three opponents. They are Innis Addison, Billy Wayne and Bernie Woods.
