Bicycle Safety
a
bike
for
christmas
this
year...
experts
say
you
need
to
make
sure
it's
been
put
together
correctly
and
safely.
if
not
--
you
could
be
putting
your
loved
one
at
risk.
the
story
is
new
tonight
with
crime
reporter
chris
redford.
here
at
river
city
cycling
in
shreveport...
it
takes
bike
mechanic
DREW
McDONALD
about
an
hour
and
a
half
to
put
together
a
bicycle..
"Has
to
be
torque
properly,
adjusted,
straightened."
even
when
McDONALD'S
FINISHED..
the
bike
isn't..
"The
bike
actually
gets
double
checked
after
I
build
it
by
a
second
mechanic
who
spends
twenty
minutes
double
checking
everything
that
I
did
and
taking
it
for
a
test
riding
the
bike."
all
in
all...
it
takes
about
two
hours
to
get
just
one
bike
from
the
the
box
to
the
showroom
floor...
not
the
case
in
some
of
the
larger
stores.
"We've
had
someone
tell
us
that
the
target
time
to
put
a
bike
together
at
one
large
retailer
is
eleven
minutes.
I
can't
get
a
bike
out
of
the
box
in
eleven
minutes."
owner,
ian
webb,
says
he
can
understand
why
bigger
stores
can't
spend
as
much
time..
they've
got
to
keep
the
bikes
moving...
but
he
says
the
less
time
someone
spends
putting
them
together..
the
more
dangerous
they
can
be.
"We've
had
bikes
come
in
here
that
are
brand
new
with
loose
brake
cables
on
them."
webb
says
that
not
only
scares
him
as
a
shop
owner,
it
scares
him
as
a
parent.
he
says
if
you're
going
to
buy
your
bike
somewhere
other
than
a
bike
shop..
it's
a
good
idea
to
at
least
have
it
checked
at
one
"It
doesn't
have
to
be
this
bike
shop,
but
take
it
there
and
ask
them
to
go
through
it
thoroughly
and
tune
it
up
for
you
so
you
can
rest
assured
it's
put
together
safely."
the
bike
shop
will
more
than
likely
charge
you..
but
webb
says
if
it
keeps
your
child
safe..
it'll
be
worth
every
cent.
