Skew-T/Log-P Diagram Hinted At Stormy Day
POSTED: 5:17 pm CDT July 26, 2010UPDATED: 7:05 pm CDT July 26, 2010This morning's sounding data from the Shreveport National Weather Service and www.rap.ucar.edu looked promising for strong to severe thunderstorms across the ArkLaTex for the afternoon. The end result was numerous severe storm warnings with 1 inch diameter hail, 60 mph plus winds, flooding type rains and extensive cloud to ground lightning strikes.Today's major storm ingredients were,1. Higher CAPE to make storms stronger with faster downdrafts and gusty outflows. 2. More tropical moisture for heavy rains. 3. Cooling mid levels and hot low levels for increased instability and also to aid in hail formation and gusty winds. 4. Numerous boundaries for storms to initiate on. 5. Boundary interactions to increase directional shear or rotation in conjunction with the high CAPEs-to make severe pulse type storms. Here, the updrafts and downdrafts separate to allow storms to live longer and hail to grow larger. 6. Light steering currents to make the heavy rain producers slow movers and cause flooding.Tuesday afternoon may turn out like today.Have a good evening.
