Recent heavy rains have for the most part avoided the northern ArkLaTex...i.e. Arkansas and Oklahoma. In fact, this week's totals range from near a tenth of an inch in El Dorado to 3.10" in Texarkana. Idabel and Broken Bow received a little over an inch and a half. These amounts are normally considered big downpours, but with 2012 deficits of close to 10 inches...they did little to curb our drought.
Thus, the extremely dry conditions continue according to the NOAA Drought Monitor. NOAA says that to erase the drought over say a one month period would take about 12-15 inches of rain. Unfortunately, the current forecast calls for only localized amounts of a half inch to 1.50" over the next few days.
