The third leading cause of death in this country is a stroke.

A stroke can leave you with problems walking, speaking, and feeding yourself, just to name a few problems. Diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol can all contribute to a stroke. Diets high in fat, low in fiber, and a lack of exercise are also factors in a stroke.

Louisiana residents are especially at high risk because of a lack of activity, and a diet with a high salt intake.

Curtis Prejean, MD encourages everyone to pay attention to the risk factors of having a stroke, including your family history.

If someone around you starts to have slurred speech, can't smile, or lift their arms or legs, call 9-1-1 immediately.

If taken to the hospital in time, medication can be given that offsets side effects of a stroke.

CDC - Stroke kills nearly 150,000 of the 860,000 Americans who die of cardiovascular disease each year—that’s 1 in every 19 deaths from all causes.
