(BOSSIER CITY) - Governor John Bel Edwards shared a promise with retired teachers in Bossier City.
Governor Edwards gave the keynote address to the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association.
He thanked teachers for their work, and told the group that his number one priority next year is to increase teacher pay.
Edwards wants to give teachers a $1,000 raise, and give a $500 raise to support staff.
"There's not a more important ingredient to quality education and improved educational outcomes than having a highly motivated and professional dedicated teacher in every classroom. And, you jeopardize that when you go years without giving these pay raises, and when pay in Louisiana is not competitive with pay in other states," said Edwards.
Edwards says his plans for pay raises will be in a proposal he's giving to the legislature next week.
