NATCHITOCHES, La. -- A Natchitoches Parish man faces several criminal charges after he head-butted a deputy following a traffic stop Thursday morning, according to information from the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office.
Derrick Sawyer, 32, of 120 Reba Street, Natchitoches, is in the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center charged with signs/signals violations, no driver's license, resisting an officer and battery on a police officer. He's held without bond.
Sawyer has prior arrests of violence towards law enforcement officers.
Deputies first saw Sawyer on Keyser Avenue and tried to stop him for a traffic violation. They say he continued for several streets before stopping.
Sawyer gave two false names when first arrested. Deputies say he then became combative and started to resist.
During the encounter the violator failed to comply with the deputy’s commands, headbutting the deputy in the mouth dazing him," the news release states.
Deputy S. Axsom requested assistance and additional sheriff’s units and Louisiana State Police responded.
Axsom was treated at the scene by EMS and transported to an orthodontist office for x-rays of his mouth. He suffered fractured teeth.
