MARSHALL Tx. - East Texas drivers could be expected to start paying up when they hit the road.
The North East Texas Regional Mobility Authority or NET RMA announced a proposed extension of Toll 49 into Harrison County. The toll road is currently a loop around Tyler, Texas. The authority has six segments planned all the way to U.S Highway 271.The final two segments are still in development.
The 26-mile segment 8 would start at U.S Highway 259 just north of FM 1650 and end at U.S 59 north of Marshall.
The executive director of NET RMA, Chris Miller says, it would take at least 15 years until it is finished. They will need to get approval from TXDOT. They are also looking to get a federal grant. Miller says they need to do a study on the potential route and design it.
"It's so far out in terms of when you would be able to move on something like this that it's really difficult to give - say 'Yeah it's going to happen'," Miller said. "We're going to move everything we can to make sure it happens."
Miller says the money collected from tolls will go back into the road.
The toll road will be electronic. Meaning, there will be cameras to scan a toll tag that connects to a bank card. If you don't have a toll tag, a camera will scan your plates and send you a bill in the mail.
