Patient receives free dental care

A community college gave people in the Arklatex a chance to see a dentist for free today.

Southern University at Shreveport partnered with Miles for Smiles Mobile Dental Care to put on "Dentistry from the Heart".

It's the first free dental care event held at the school.

Patients didn't need insurance, but they did have to be at least 18 to get an extraction, filling, or cleaning.

Five dentists, eight dental hygienists, and SUSLA students provided care to more than 100 people.

"We are a community college and it's important that we not just be part of the community, but we give back to the community. And, utilizing our students who have to have clinical experience as part of their training is just one way we can give back," said, SUSLA Chancellor, Dr. Rodney Ellis

The chancellor hopes the free dental clinic becomes a yearly event.
