TEXARKANA, Ark. - Texarkana, Ark. officials are moving forward with plans to create an entertainment district downtown.
The new designation would allow for outdoor drinking.
Right now, the city is still working on regulations and rules to safeguard residents.
A new state law allow cities to designate areas for outdoor alcohol consumption.
The city's proposal includes 14-block area of downtown to be designated as an entertainment district.
If approved, the new ordinance would allow people to buy alcohol at a restaurant in the downtown area and then enjoy their drink outside.
No bottles or cans allowed.
Some of the city's concerns include the hours of alcohol service and potential trash issues.
Board members are now working to hash out details of the plan and set up specific rules.
"I think if we want to continue to move Texarkana forward, I think it's going to take a collective effort, the citizens, elected officials and administrators alike, to ensure we preserve the history we have down here," explained City Manger Kenny Haskins.
The proposed ordinance allows for outdoor drinking between 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-10 p.m. on Sunday.
Board members will have to approve the plan before businesses can take advantage of the new law.
