Since when did using the bathroom become such a sensitive issue?
Probably even before the Obama administration put out its directive on how public schools should handle a transgender student.
The controversy was already stirring when Target blogged weeks before that it would allow its transgender employees and guests to use the bathrooms corresponding with their gender identity. States were also grappling with their own legislation about LBGT rights.
"As a transgender person I'm jumping for joy...as a parent I'm concerned, says Rebecca Norris."
Rebecca Norris is transgender and is happy about the federal directive on transgenders using the bathroom they identify with. She was born a man but identifies as a woman. She also represents the Shreveport - Bossier chapter of Louisiana Transgender Advocates.
Prior to her transition into a woman, she retired from the military and had a family.
Norris' kids are grown but like many non-transgender people she still cares about the possible dangers that could come from President Obama's transgender directive.
"As a parent, I'm concerned that some pervert, some rapist somebody that is willing to take advantage of this new law or regulations," said Norris.
Many people have taken to social media like our facebook page to voice their opinion on the matter. Here are a few comments taken directly from our KTBS 3 Facebook page.
It's not hard people!!! If you have a male genital you use the male restroom!!! Period!!! If you walk in on my restroom time...You gonna get tasered!!!!
This should not even be happening! People need to call this what it is sin, boys are boys girls are girls and they need to using the bathroom accordingly!!!!
Dr. Gevan Spinney is the pastor of First Baptist Haughton.
He is also president of the Louisiana Baptist Convention.
He says Christians need to come from a place of love and not hate on this issue. He says while many people from the LGBT community might not like what he has to say about the issue of transgenders using the bathroom he believes God is clear on this issue.
"God has not made any mistakes. We believe that with the abortion issue. We believe that with the transgender issue.
God made you a man then you use the men's bathroom. I want to communicate that to everyone who struggles with that. The church wants to communicate the truth that we love, we care about you. Christ cares about you but if you're born a woman, God has made you that way, created you that way and you are to use the ladies restroom," says Dr. Spinney.
Norris says despite what religion says she is afraid for the safety of transgenders because they get harassed and assaulted and she believes it can lead to murder.
