WASKOM, Texas - The Waskom city council has passed an ordinance that bans abortion within the city's limits.
The council voted unanimously to pass the ordinance.
Mark Dixon, with Right to Life East Texas, says he worked with city councilors to come up with the ordinance.
The group held a rally Sunday night in support of the ordinance. In a Facebook post, the group says adopting the ordinance would make Waskom "the first 'Sanctuary City For the Unborn' in the entire State of Texas."
“This is something that has teeth that will actually allow the City of Waskom to protect themselves from having an abortion clinic here. Whether that’s one that comes from the North, East, or wherever, Waskom will be protected.”, said Mark Dixon, with Right to Life East Texas.
This ordinance comes after council members and residents there realized, if abortion becomes illegal in Louisiana, a clinic could open in Waskom and continue practicing abortions, serving women from the Shreveport area.
Louisiana lawmakers recently voted to ban abortions after a heartbeat has been detected.
the restriction, backed by the state's democratic governor, could prohibit abortions as early as six weeks...
However-- this bill is tied to a similar bill in Mississippi... If Roe VS Wade gets overturned, Louisiana and Mississippi’s bills will become law.
