BOSSIER CITY, La. - In front of a raucous crowd at the CenturyLink Center, the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team beat Argentina in straight sets to qualify for the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.
The 25-22, 25-17, 25-13 outing against the 11th ranked Argentinians capped off a great Tokyo Women’s Volleyball Qualification Tournament in Pool C for the women's team after they beat Kazakhstan and Bulgaria on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Middle blocker/hitter Haleigh Washington realized how special the moment was before the final match concluded.
"It was actually right at game point. It was 24, we were serving and I remember I got goosebumps on my arm," she said with a smile. "I was like 'we are playing to go to the Olympics right now. You are on the floor playing to send USA Volleyball to the Olympics,' and it was this surreal moment and I had to snap myself out of it because we still had volleyball to play, but then once we got it and the ball fell and it was our time, it was amazing."
Setter Lauren Carlini added, "I mean it's incredible and to do it in front of a home crowd on national television, it's a dream come true for a lot of us and so the opportunity to compete at such a high level and qualify for the Olympics on the first try, it's a big opportunity and big success for us."
The team now has two weeks off before they begin preparing for the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup.
